Archive for November, 2010

by Engineman Preserved Wook

After having condemned all of you hapless enough to go for a holiday spin in an airliner a couple of posts back, to rot, die, crash and burn, here are my picks for the most interesting railroad- and transportation-related links in November.  What’s in them?  Well, my children, as Old Uncle Analdas Wook used to say in Maine so many, many years ago, “See fer yer own fool selves!”

These all are sites that I found of more-or-less great interest last month, to do with railroads, locomotives, aviation and warplanes; many open the way to view interesting picture archives.

Be that as it may, THE road to respectability for the “illegal” “Mexican” “drug” “gangs” will be vending to aging (and now busted!) Baby Boomers pharmaceuticals at reasonable (!) prices. Go figure, a HUGE unmanageable border, VERY porous, LOTS of Chinese-made counterfeits, of Viagra and statin drugs and all the other killer crap Old Bastards Like Me (sixty-one) “need”, and — finally — morphine, LOTS of morphine. From (you guessed it!) Afghan warlords & Taliban made-for-(you guessed it AGAIN!)Tee Vee “terrorists”.

I am a _real_ conservative which is why I have NO time for these Tea Party dim & dull-normal potguts, the NeoCon Secret Israeli Saudis OR the GOP — THESE Baby Boom Ignorami One & All actually can NOT think:

The twenty-year slow-motion holocaust of the 1946-64 “Most God-Awful Generation Of Thumbsuckers” now beginning — there are 60 million of us rummies who have got to get off of the train! — is a tremendous business opportunity for anyone who can jump over the fence and swap production sources. The time is more than ripe:

1) Late-modern “helping (subsidy!) professionalism” now at the end of the second decade of the postmodern not only is anachronistic, it is dead in the water and not even Jesus Obama can breath new life back into THAT corpse. I love this President, but that don’t mean he isn’t a lost soul along with ALL of the other elites, Left & Right. The salaries and perks of Public Liberals were a very clever late-historical solution to the problems of in History, of
bribery and corruption. But, now:

2) The constitutional and territorial state is shot in the you-know-what by “globalization,” and plus THAT MODEL is flat broke.

3) The only way the new boom CAN be capitalized is to IGNORE “governance,” especially in this case the INS, the FDA and the NEMA-AMA medical-monopolists, and

4) Sign over your house and your remaining money to The Mexicans (pick your gang, it’s an open market like fat boys such as Newt Gingrich and Obvious Pedo “Karly” Rove can only jabber about!) in return for lifetime medication and a nice hospice situation at the end, and

5) to Hell with the GOP AND the Democrat Party, those poor slobs are way more confused the The Chilean Miners ever were even when they thought they’d never get out…only THESE guys (and Ann Coulter) CAN not be saved.

(That’s it for me, I love your blog, you have a very catholic [hehehe!] breadth and depth and grasp of interests!)

Transport of Delight
ex-LMS steam

These photographs date from 1959-61 and are of locomotives
from the pre-nationalisation London, Midland & Scottish
Railway. The LMS was the biggest of the Big Four and
contributed 7850 locomotives to BR on its vesting date.

My archive includes locomotives from the Midland Railway
(MR), Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway (L&Y), Caledonian
Railway (CR), the Somerset & Dorset Joint Railway
(SDJR) and the LMS itself. Some LMS classes were added
to by British Railways. These are identified in the captions
by the addition of (BR).

There are 44 photographs in this section.

Here is a fine photograph from the last age, of a pair of holiday expresses racing East from Chicago in the Fall of 1928; it was taken the year before the stockmarket crash of 1929 and so symbolizes, acutely, the full reek and blossom of late-modernity.  With the post-WWII loss of American industrial nerve and destruction of the heavy industrial labor unions, and the tearing down of the wall in Berlin in 1989, the modernism of the Old Atlantic West is now altogether ended completely.

All of that, though, was hidden in the dark future in to which raced eighty-two years ago the Pennsylvania Railroad 4-6-2 K4 on the Broadway Limited, and the 4-6-4 Hudson at the head of the New York Central Twentieth Century Limited.

Only their ghostly shadows remain, in a fine eternal image here that shows us still a deep moral and mythical truth, the truth of the human heart even though (more…)
